The recurrent conflicts in the Africa’s Great Lakes region, particularly in the East of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has not only plunged the region into a multifaceted crisis touching on socio-political, security, economic, diplomatic and environmental and humanitarian aspects but also jeopardized the future of generations to come.
Gathering in Dar-es-salaam- Tanzania during the Regional Forum on Peace in the African Great Lakes Region held from 23rd to 25th October 2024, leaders and social actors from states in the Africa’s Great Lakes region joined the list of those who have demonstrated concern over the matter; such as the states, sub regional and regional organizations of Africa and international partners.
In a declaration dated 25th October 2024, the forum which drew the participation and representation from: religious denominations, customary chiefs, NGOs, Civil Society Coordination, Women, Youth and notables; declared to solemnly undertake to pursue among others: strengthening security and protection of Human rights; Humanitarian assistance in support of affected populations; and strengthening governance and restoring the authority of the state especially towards the return of peace. Additionally, they called for inter alia: immediate cessation of hostilities and restoration of peace; respect for human rights, democratic principles, values and all commitments made by states in the region to restore sustainable peace; and the promotion of the people’s culture by states in the region in line with Africa Union’s Agenda 2063 aspiration on “African cultural identity, values and ethics”.
The forum which brought together 41 participants was convened by the Organizational Innovation Network (RIO) in collaboration with FECCLAHA and Brot für die Welt.
